Waaaait a minute … Double Indemnity’s calling, and it wants its dialogue back.
No question—Katsuni and Deen are playing, line for line, a memorable Barbara Stanwyck-Fred MacMurray scene from Billy Wilder’s 1944 film noir masterpiece. And other familiar bits are sprinkled throughout (plus, oddly enough, a quote from Hitchcock’s Marnie).
Yet once one gets over the initial surprise, the homage actually works. How can you go wrong mixing top-notch sex scenes with an Oscar-nominated screenplay? And as a black widow looking to off her abusive husband, Katsuni exudes a cool sexuality that does Stanwyck’s iconic femme fatale proud.
If there are other porn producers interested in paying tribute to classic noir, we’ve got two suggestions, both filled with memorable lines. There’s Mildred Pierce, which, like Double Indemnity, was based on a seedy James M. Cain novel. Or how about The Big Sleep? It even has a subplot involving porn.
