It's weird. Right in the middle of the hot 'n' heavy porn industry, veteran performer Mike Horner has managed to make an art film. An art film, fer chrissakes! Sure, there's sex in it, and, in fact, all of the scenes are reasonably well done, if a bit short, and the camerawork (by Jane Waters) and music (by Tom Elliott) are truly excellent — but this is a film that begs to be judged more by the standards of an Andrew Blake creation than a Buttslammers. Since when, for instance, have you seen a sex film divided into acts?
I'd like to say Tangled is a black comedy with overtones of "Waiting For Godot", but I'm afraid there's just not enough humor and a little too much Beckett. Mike Horner plays a guy in a grassy field who's all tangled up in a fishing net (symbolism! symbolism!), who, while struggling to escape his bounds, meets up with a fairly normal collection of weirdos. These include newlyweds Tyffany Million and Jesse Eastern, who feed him lunch while screwing their brains out on their picnic blanket; "virgin" Devon Shire, who, because Horner is all tied up, feels safe enough to offer him her cherry; bacchanalians Nina Hartley, Ariana, Ona and Frank Zee, Tony and Tina (Tyler) Tedeschi, Luc Wylder and the barely-seen Laurie Cameron; and finally, Teri Diver, who crawls out of the bushes just as tangled in a net as Horner, and fucks him by the bank of a stream.
The film is story heavy, with a few good psychological points being made about the human condition and how we relate to each other, but the brief sex scenes just aren't powerful enough to make this a good sex film. This is the type of picture that deserves to be shown in film and art classes as an example of what the genre can do — but it isn't going to be the tape the average guy pulls out to jack off to on a Saturday night. Retailers with good track records selling/renting Blake features, or Vivid's Immortal Desires, should definitely stock this unique feature.
