The Decline of Western Civilization Part 69: The Porno Years is many things. Depending on your point of view, it's an homage, a parody, or a rip-off of director Penelope Spheeris' 1988 documentary on the LA music scene, The Decline of Western Civilization Part 2 - The Metal Years.
Director/star Lockwood's Decline is a well-intentioned, ambitious project that's well shot and, thanks to the editing talents of Eon McKai (whose name is misspelled in the credits), moves at a good clip. The movie is part porn (meaning there's fucking), part actual documentary and, most of all, a massive love letter from Kurt Lockwood to himself.
Here are a few things we get to learn about the star: Kurt fucks sexy porn girls. Kurt gets his asshole licked while being blown. Kurt struts around Hollywood in his wife beater. Kurt stands on a hilltop, in all his tatted-up, shirtless majesty (a little something for the ladies, apparently), pontificating on the sociological aspects of porn vs. music. Kurt fucks some more porn girls. Kurt tells us his life story. And Kurt rocks out; you bet he does. Watching him lead his band at local LA clubs, it's clear he has a knack for writing punk/metal hooks, and he has the onstage macho posturing routine down to the point of out tapping Spinal Tap.
Speaking of which, Lockwood provides subtitles to his lyrics. You wouldn't want to miss Kurt's curiously agro thoughts: "Hey daddy. Do you wanna fight? I'm the baddest motherfucker that's on this stage tonight. Sister. Do you wanna bleed? Coz between your thighs lies everything I need, yeah."
The piece also contains some sincere, insightful commentary by Ron Jeremy and features Dr. Sharon Mitchell on her AIM health care program. Unfortunately, these elements are undermined by "interviews" with a character called Rev. Brimstone deriding porn and those who take part in it. Getting a real right wing Christian would have been vastly more entertaining. And Lockwood's silly take on W.A.S.P. guitarist Chris Holmes' vodka-drenched swim/interview from the original Spheeris Decline doesn't help matters.
Essentially, Decline can't seem to make up its mind what it wants to be. An advertisement for Lockwood's bitchin' sex and rock lifestyle? (When he's not rocking, he's apparently in some kind of orgy). An informative look at how adult has superceded rock in underground impact? A tale of how a young man was unable to make it in brutal mainstream Hollywood, only to find a happy home in adult? An above average smut film offering some delectable females? (Dig Samantha Ryan, fans).
Whether you find Lockwood a talented, enviable artist or a guy who screws for a living drowning in his own ego, you've got to hand it to him: He works hard; he gets things done. It took balls to create this flick, and his slice of western civilization is doing anything but declining.
Retailing: Push to fans of sex and rock.
