Call 'em any name you like; wolves, Don Juans, satyrs . . . the guys who hop in bed with a girl on the first night, but never with the same girl two nights in a row. What if their overactive libido was the result of an "addiction" to the same chemical the body produces when a person falls in love? That's the premise behind Sexually Altered States which, if there's any justice, should be a contender for "Film of the Year" honors and is one of the sexiest, funniest adult films this reviewer has ever seen.

Two friends who co-own a New York ad agency find their livelihoods may be in jeopardy, due to one's unquenchable thirst for new encounters of the female kind. Homer's conquest's include Danielle, Sharon Kane and Taija Rae (plus on-screen ex Sharon Mitchell), so it's a cinch that while this guy may be sick, he's no fool. Nonetheless, buddy Bullock, along with his girlfriend Hartley, decide to get help for Horner from doctor-author Stevens, who conveniently has a best-seller out on just that problem, entitled "Taming the Wolf."

Well, the Doc helps Horner, all too well, because the now-reformed "wolf" nearly squelches the agency's new campaign for a rich client (on the grounds of relying too much on sex) before all is made right and he winds up with the "nice woman" next door. It's a breezy, light-hearted look at love and sex that hits all the right buttons. Horner and Bullock carry off their freindship well, showing a deft timing in their scenes together, and Bullock and Hartley set off quite a few fireworks. Taija Rae shines in a funny bit as a roller-skating hotel bellgirl with a Betty Boop-like voice, as does Stevens as the publicity-mad doctor.

"Okay, Al," you're saying, "so it's funny. What about the S-E-X?" Well, any film that starts with Danielle can't be all bad, and it gets better from there. Hartley tries to service Bullock while he is suspended upside down on a exercise machine ("I can't come this way," he whines. "It's against Nature."), and there's a wild three-way "hot tub" scene (actually, it's an old copper kettle, but who's kvetching). Just as hot, and twice as amusing, is a quadruple encounter between Bullock, Hartley and uninvited guests Sharon Mitchell and Paul Thomas.

The screen team of director Arthur Ben and writer Pamela Penn (whoever they are) also gave us the fine feature Fashion Fantasies earlier this year, and by all counts should have another hit on their hands. S.A.S. is indeed a step up on adult cinema's evolutionary ladder, perfect for couples, singles or anyone looking for a good, sexy time. Wolves of the world, beware.
