Well, maybe "mad" isn't quite the right word to use. Let's try "hacked off," as in "I was hacked off at watching yet another often-done sexcursion into previously-charted waters." As always, the stunning Porsche Lynn gives her all in her performance, but. . . well, even Cal Ripken sits out an inning every now and then.
The amount of creativity in Mad About You can be divined from the setting: a hospital clinic for the sexually promiscuous. Hmmm, have we seen that before? Spoiled rich girl Lynn has been sent there by her parents to cure her nymphette ways, but when the head doctor is Joey Silvera and Rita Ricardo the chief nurse, it soon becomes clear that the cure will be worse than the disease. To make matters worse, poor Porsche is also accosted by janitor Billy Dee and fellow patient Stella Virgin, but with the help of a sexually ambiguous inmate named Ralph/Rita (Jerry Butler who's done one too many in- drag roles) she plans her escape.
Hospital scenes have suffered from overkill in adult productions. The competent cast goes through their motions, particularly Lynn (who effectively conveys a young woman both afraid and entranced by her sexuality) and Butler (who manages to keep his makeup and high heels on through his scene with Lynn), but two actors do not a film make. Only a dream sequence near the movie's end shows any sort of novelty and promise. Maybe that's the most maddening thing about Mad About You . . . there is promise.
