Wafting wheatfields at sunset, waves crashing on a rock jetty, floating campfire sparks – these are the haunting, museum-quality images of The Coven. But like museum displays, whose objects are oft-times breathtaking, still they remain objects – not human beings of flesh and desire. Told mainly through images of pagan rites intercut with scenes of contemporary life, the viewer is left to fill in the details of the plot, which we're not given enough information here to piece together – guess we'll have to wait for Part 2.

As the head witch of an ancient sex-worshipping coven, Janine reaches out with her supernatural skills to possess the mind of Kristi Lynn, bombarding it with images of erotic rituals (including a fireside gangbang with Tianna Taylor, Nick East, Mark Davis, and Alex Sanders, ending in a triple cum shot). Why Kristi is the receiver remains unclear. During a doggie-style session in the breakfast nook (more pork sasuages, Ma?) with her boyfriend Steven St. Croix, Kristi flashes back – to a moonlit event where Steve reams Brittany O'Connell's butt on his car. Though Brit makes a fine squirming hood ornament, her delicious poop chute never gets the jism-greasing it deserves. Certain of St. Croix's cheatin' ways, Kristi kicks him out and takes in a roommate – Janine! (Reincarnated?) A quick beachside chat about spirituality provides enough bonding to steer them into a rooftop saliva-swap, one of the truly steamy highlights.

Craftsmanship overshadows content in The Coven, which often mesmerizes but barely arouses. A prime example of its remoteness is a flashback sequence where Nikki Shane, Brittany and Mark Davis tango to a tuneful Gregorian chant. The lensing is spectacular but the carnal flames are doused by inadequate tension in editing and inappropriate music.  Perhaps Part 2 will ignite more than just one's imagination. Additional cast: Laurie Cameron, Paul Morgan, Max Steiner.
