Although billed on the box as a "transsexual feature," this beautiful production has only two sex scenes with Stasha, a real baby doll who could have carried the video by herself. A larger role for her and a little less sloppiness on the production side, and this feature would have rated higher.
Stasha is in the market for some stolen sketches; so is insurance investigator Sharon Mitchell. During their individual quests, they encounter — and bed — three underworld types. Finally, Sharon gains possession of the sketches, slips them in a condom and hides them ... well, you can guess where.
The problem often encountered with a video that has a strong story not necessarily involving sex is that it is difficult to introduce sex without making it seem like every character has only one thing on their minds. Promises manages to integrate the sex within the story nicely, although one wonders if crooks are often searched for weapons hidden between their legs in real life. [Ed.: They are.]
Cliches aside, this is a beautiful film, and some scenes are simply gorgeous. The mood lighting and video quality are akin to a filmed production. Background music is appropriate and unobtrusive, and the cast can act in and out of bed. Too bad that careful editing didn't delete things like flubbed and repeated lines or off-screen direction ("More noise, Mark" and "Lean back".)
