As a psychological thriller, Cape Lere is not going to have you running for the nearest blanket to hide under, but it certainly tries to convey some of the mood and intensity of its mainstream namesake. Only, it can't seem to decide whether it wants to be a comedy or a drama. (It does know that it's a sexvid, though.)
Cape Lere settles for black comedy with lawyer Mike Horner playing his standard character with the nervous tic wondering whether some homicidal maniac is out to get him. His wife Sharon Kane tells him that his cousin Martin (Matt Daniels) is coming over for the weekend, but Horner swears that Daniels is actually a former client - mass murderer Jack DeNiro. Daniels, who gives Brooke Shields a run for the money in the eyebrows department, performs a couple of serviceable turns with Heather, and lends enough convincing strangeness to his portrayal to have you wondering just who is this guy; cousin or killer?
Actually, it's Nick E., Horner's hired P.I., that does the pretty good DeNiro impersonation from the movie, and Nick figures prominently in the video's punchline which carries a little bit of an unexpected twist.
The production is fresh-looking, and the sex is graced with a fair degree of exuberance. Not director Savage's best but still a pretty decent outing.
