This marvelously unpredictable film is by turns funny, sweet and - ultimately - tragic. It begins as a classic Walter Mitty tale; Mike Horner plays a stuttering porno-fan geek with a lively fantasy life. When he visits the local adult theater, the performers on the screen pause during their sex scene to converse with him! (In a parody/homage to '70s raincoat flicks, the picture is scratchy and slightly out of synch with the dialog - perhaps because projectionist Joey Silvera is busy getting it on with Vanessa Chase in a sizzling anal/open mouth facial.)
The desperate Horner eventually pays prostitute Bardoux for sex lessons. In true fairytale romance fashion, she takes a shine to the prince within the nerd and gives the frog a complete makeover. The movie's final, dark turn, as Horner gets carried away by his newfound studly appeal, is disappointing yet realistic, and resonates strongly.
Mark down Horner's and Bardoux's initial, tender "love lesson" as a strong contender for best couples scene. Horner also deserves a nom for best actor. His round-trip journey from loser to Lothario is both humorous and poignant. With its many plot twists, fine acting and several hot sex scenes, Lessons is a gem of a film - 24 carats of viewing pleasure.
