François Clousot's Director's Cut, about the trials and tribulations of being
a director – a French one, at that – of XXX features, will undoubtedly lead
the viewer to at least a couple of conclusions:
1) Jean-Luc Goddard (the former Steven St. Croix) should in the future
refrain from trying a French accent. (Anthony Crane, on the other hand, may
continue to use his.)
2) Director Clousot might consider, if he decides to do another self-parody,
getting someone else to write it. He's obviously too close to the situation.
Which isn't to say that some of the situations don't ring true. Performers
arriving late. Performers who don't want to do dialogue. Performers who get
sick while on set. Performers showing up on set saying, "I've got to be out
by 2. I've got another shoot." Fire marshals (or, in this case, a "permit
inspector") checking out the set's safety, then staying to watch the action –
or in the case of Ryan Conner, participating in it. Conner's girl/girl with
Briana Banks is eminently watchable.
On the other hand, Crane most definitely underplays ubiquitous real
French stills photog Laurent Sky; just ask anyone who's actually been on one
of Sky's sets. And we don't know any director who's actually calmed down a
lead actress (Julie Meadows) by fucking her. And as for what a director
might do with his producer (Banks) after a long day of shooting, we don't
even want to know... but viewers might. (Its high points are a hot reverse
cowgirl and mish.)
All that aside, Director's Cut is an amusing and occasionally steamy piece
of work. Evan Stone pile-driving Banks is okay, but make-up gal Stevie
seducing stagehand Steve Hatcher is a real temperature- (and cock-) raiser:
terrific reverse cowgirl, with a pop from spoon position that reaches all the
way up to the pretty brunette's neck.
Likewise, both Goddard's mish and doggie with Meadows, and Aurora
Snow's moans during the doggie and cowgirl with Crane are well worth
watching, but the one to really look out for is Dee spooning Chris Cannon
after camping on his peg.
There aren't enough decent comedies in adult, but Director's Cut can be
added to the list.
