Fifty Shades of Grey has become a phenomenon for a reason: It's taken the world of BDSM and kinky sex out of the shadows and shined a spotlight on it, making it OK for the general public to talk about spankings, bondage and Kegel balls. And while the imaginations of women have run wild with fantasies of Christian Grey and kinky fuckery, Smash Pictures was brave enough to tackle the already well-loved material and give it a hardcore presentation.
Fifty Shades of Grey: A XXX Adaptation opens with Grey (Ryan Driller) meeting Anastasia Steele (Allie Haze) for the first time in his office, much like the book. Big chunks of the plot are furthered in the movie by dialoue and innuendo, but it stays very faithful.
The trick for any movie version of a book is finding the right actors to pull off the descriptive and intense dialogue. Smash Pictures nailed it here with Ryan Driller as Grey and Allie Haze as Steele. Driller's interpretation of Grey is of a self-assured man who is precise in his words and actions, which Driller pulls off without coming across as too cocky. His delivery is smooth not only when it comes to the words he says, but also with the actions he takes in the sex scenes. Haze brilliantly pulls off the Steele character, really pulling off the vulnerable virgin who is totally mesmerized by Grey personally and sexually, but strong enough to stand her ground when needed. And there's no denying the chemistry that comes across in the sex scenes between the duo. What's probably most impressive, though, is that neither of them seems to break character and fall into predictable "porn sex" even in the most heated of moments. And true to the sex in the books, the couple uses a condom in their early sex scenes.
Fans of the books are sure to love the added sex scenes between other, more minor character from the books, such as Anastasia's roommate Kate Kavenaugh (Alexis Ford) and Christian's brother Elliot (Johnny Castle). (The characters are even more minor in this adaptation, but still give a hot and steamy scene.)
Julia Ann does a great job in the Mrs. Robinson role, getting rough enough during her sex scenes with Driller to make it believable, and just bitchy enough to Haze to make you believe her. And kudos to Jaslene Jade for taking on the role of Leila, Grey's former sub, without going over the line and becoming too creepy or comical.
Fans of hardcore bondage play will probably have issues with the portrayal of that lifestyle here, but no more than the issue they would have with the original book. Those who have never experienced or seen any bondage play on screen are likely to be titillated enough to seek out more.
Since the fervor over the books started and Hollywood announced a mainstream adaptation was in the works, the big questions for many have been who will play the main characters, and how will Hollywood pull off a good adaptation without the explicit sex scenes? Thankfully Smash Pictures provides great answers in their take on the bestsellers, and delivers one of the best movies of the year at the same time.
