The first in a five-part series, this hour-long, part-documentary, part-greatest hits collection was filmed in 1990. Host Steve Malis shares some historical notes on AMG and introduces a collection of short films. Fans probably won't learn anything new, but for AMG virgins, this serves as a simple yet solid introduction. As Malis explains, AMG was most at home on the streets of contemporary urban America, using portraits of punks and cops, thugs and victims, and good guys vs. bad guys in softcore films that used wrestling, spanking, and massaging as expressions of male intimacy. It was a contradictory world "filled with sexual images, yet oddly asexual, a unique sort of Never Never Land." Malis also shows clips of a few of the more popular models like Jim Paris and Michael Fury, and touches upon the role of women in the shorts ("usually jezebels"). A few gems await here, like the funny "Trick or Treat," which uses intense (and intended) over-acting to comedic effect, and "The Slave Fights Back," which is one of the last images of a model who, weeks later, was shipped to Vietnam where he died. Other shorts, like "Tijuana Bandit," have made appearances on previous DVD releases. Malis also introduces "Bathroom Athlete" and then interviews one of its models 30 years after it was made. Extras on the disc include five shorts that feature mostly spanking, as well as a clip of (unseen) Bob Mizer directing a photo session. Nothing too in-depth here, but still a fun ride. Unfortunately, the box doesn't explain what the feature is actually about, but the AMG name is all it needs.
