Though she began as co-director of features for L.A. Brown in the late '90s, Fay Dubois-not a drag queen-has been concentrating for the past couple of years on video editing and has become quite in-demand in that field. With the recent dissolution of L.A. Brown, Dubois decided to start her own company, Latin Pacific, aimed at featuring hot, West-Coast Latin males in visually exciting productions. Desert Sol is the first and it's a hit. It's not perfect, but even with its flaws it's one of the best movies of the year.

Filmed among abandoned shacks and outbuildings in the bleak, ghostly, windswept Southern California desert, the six sex-scene production opens with a scavenger finding an old reel of film in a dilapidated shack. He threads it through a projector in his garage and watches this grainy, scratchy 16mm film of very attractive Latinos having sex under the desert sun. This framing device is extremely effective and gives the video a voyeuristic quality that really boosts the heat. Each scene begins as if it's the damaged, scratched film, then gradually becomes video-clear as the sex progresses. In addition to this superb visual effect, Dubois has taken great pains that the soundtrack should be as eerie and atmospheric as the landscape. There is no dialogue, just mysterious music and the sound of the wind.

Though some of the cast are a little overused, the majority are fairly fresh. Heading the "fresh" category is 21-year-old Caesar Cruz. He only solos, but he's so attractive and seductive we were happy just to see him naked. Another newcomer, B.J. Bratt, fucks Brandon Weber's mouth and ass, and babyfaced Rico Suave tops Danny Lopez in an excitingly photographed scene that climaxes with a wonderful distance load from Rico. Once again Tino Lopez fakes coming, but scene-partner adorable Sal Correlli really sends the jizz flying, which almost makes up for it. Newcomers Gil Cortez and Rio have a threeway with way-experienced bottom-boy Danny who, like a perfect hostess, knows how to keep things moving. Gil is one of those incredibly sexy, seemingly straight, guys who is enviably endowed and only tops, but doesn't seem to mind showing us his asshole. He boinks Danny and handsome Rio (who has one of those surprise-package dicks that suddenly gets long just as he comes).

The excellent outdoor photography is by Dubois, Andre Adair, and Charles Stevens. This innovative video is a refreshing example of what porn can be when a little more time, thought, and talent are invested in the product.
