Vanniall Talks Platform Control, Autonomy With Carly David

LOS ANGELES—Vanniall is featured in a new  article, "Vanniall on Paywalls and the Creator Economy," written by Carly David.

Vanniall spoke about platform control, creator visibility and what it now takes to build and sustain an audience online, opening up about how today’s creator economy has shifted from early direct-to-consumer hustles to a market increasingly shaped by algorithms and paid reach.

Said Vanniall, "It very much has become a pay-to-play market with sites like Twitter and Instagram. We’re gonna accept you to a degree, but you’re gonna have to pay in order for people to actually see your stuff."

She also talked about the pressure on creators to spend for visibility, not a retreat from free access. Vanniall added, "I was the person that was putting all of my stuff on the tube sites in full form, just to make sure that people would be able to experience it, to see it. I didn’t make it just for me to see it—I made it to be experienced."

She also touched on balance between art, business, and independence. She continued, "I had to realize that I have to protect my art in order to protect the ability to make a living from it. You don’t have to appeal to everyone to make money. In the creator economy, you at least have your own voice. In the mainstream, you’re kind of a conduit for other people’s voices."
