HOLLYWOOD, Calif.—Journalist and crime writer Jake Adelstein appears alongside adult performer Addis Fouche on the newest episode of Matt Slayer’s "And Now We Drink" podcast.
Adelstein, a reporter for Japan's largest newspaper from 1993 to 2005, and author of Tokyo Vice, The Last Yakuza, and Tokyo Noir, makes his third appearance on the podcast with this episode.
On episode 442, host Slayer, Adelstein, and Fouche discussed various topics such as finance, industry insights, life philosophies, and personal anecdotes.
The conversation kicksed off with an exchange about taxes and financial literacy, particularly in non-traditional professions like adult entertainment. Fouche shared her experiences and frustrations, highlighting the need for better guidance for newcomers in the industry. They also explored the adult industry's nuances—including the highs of public perception and the hidden challenges performers face.
Adelstein and Fouche delved into personal stories, unique career paths, and the influence of the internet age on their respective professions. Fouche also revealed the pressures and rewards of adult work, while Adelstein provided insights from his investigative journalism in Japan.
Fouche shared, "It’s always a pleasure to be a guest on 'And Now We Drink!' I love that I get to share all sides of myself here: funny, business-oriented, sexy, silly, vulnerable, weird, and literally so much more. Meeting Jake Adelstein was really great too! He’s so different from me, and also strikingly similar, so this made for a very unique episode."
Adelstein added, "It was a pleasure talking with Addis Fouché—funny, frighteningly intelligent, and one of the most interesting voices in the adult film industry today. We dove into sexual positivity, Zen, polyamory—basically everything under the sun—on Matt Slayer’s 'And Now We Drink,' while I performed the spiritual high-wire act of not getting drunk."
Adelstein continued, "As a Zen Buddhist priest, I take the fifth precept seriously: don’t drink to the point of intoxication. So I treated the night like a koan—how do you stay lucid when the room keeps trying to pour you enlightenment, one shot at a time? It was an intoxicating night and a real lesson. Addis—sharp, warm, and disarmingly honest—turned it into a conversation we won’t forget—and one we hope you will remember."
