LOS ANGELES—Andi Avalon discusses her work, parenting, and more in a new article in the British newspaper Metro.
In the article titled “This Industry Isn’t for the Faint of Heart: What It’s Like Being Married to a Porn Star,” Avalon reflects on her marriage to husband Joey and the challenges of raising three children while working in adult entertainment.
“Turns out, persistence pays off,” Avalon told the tabloid of her first meeting with Joey, who asked her out 12 times before she agreed. “We bonded over dirty martinis and his terrible jokes… Neither of us imagined we’d end up in adult film, but life has a funny way of rerouting you.”
When Joey first suggested entering the industry together, Avalon admitted she was nervous about how it might affect their family. But once they made the decision, they kept things open and honest. “We’re already the happiest, most communicative couple we know,” Avalon explained. “Why not make it our job to show others how that works?”
Avalon also spoke about the impact that entering the industry had on them and others, sharing how some of Joey’s friends cut ties, and how her own father disowned her. “It’s wild to see who comes to your side and who turns their back when you are the most vulnerable and the easiest target,” she said. “This industry is not for the faint of heart.”
Avalon also emphasized the strength of her marriage and their strategies as a couple for handling jealousy, sharing details about co-stars and using a 24-hour “pause button” policy when emotions run high. “After shoots, we reconnect physically ‘on our terms’—even if it’s just hanging out on the sofa with our favorite show and a bowl of popcorn,” she told Metro.
For Avalon, the biggest misconception about sex workers is that they are damaged or broken. “People think women in the sex industry are running from trauma or addiction,” she said. “In my experience, we’re running toward financial freedom and creative expression.”
