Tenga Reveals Which U.S. State Has the Most Interest in Sex Toys

TOKYO—Pleasure products brand Tenga has revealed which states in the U.S. are leading the way in exploring pleasure products online, based on Google Search trends data.

Due to factors such as increased sexual freedom and empowerment, the U.S. sex toy market size is expected to reach USD 17.0 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 8.19 percent. This continued growth in sales has been accompanied by a rise in curiosity and interest in pleasure products. This is especially true in the U.S., where, according to an intimacy index based on Google Trends data, Mississippi is the leading state in exploring self-pleasure and pleasure products online.

The intimacy index measured search interest in pleasure products across U.S. states on a scale from one to 100, with one being the lowest. Mississippi led the rankings with a full score of 100, followed closely by West Virginia (98), Wyoming (95), and Alaska (91).

Indeed, the South emerged as a key region in these search trends, with Louisiana (86), Alabama (83), Arkansas (83), and Tennessee (81) ranking among the top states. Meanwhile, search activity in North Dakota (83), Oklahoma (82), Kansas (80), Kentucky (80), and Maine (80) suggests that interest in male and female sex toys extends across diverse regions of the country.

The differences in search interest across the U.S. states suggest attitudes toward pleasure products are shaped by a mix of cultural, social, and regional influences. Rika Adachi, global marketing manager at Tenga, commented, "We are seeing a clear shift in attitudes towards sexual wellness products with a greater acceptance and more positive attitude, which has ultimately fueled the demand for pleasure items."

Interestingly, states like Alabama and Mississippi, which have certain restrictions on the sale of pleasure items, still ranked highly on the intimacy index, potentially indicating that legal limitations drive curiosity and online searches as an alternative avenue for purchase. The full ranking of U.S. states can be found here.

As attitudes toward intimacy and sexual wellness continue to shift, the adult toys industry is poised for continued growth. From sculptural EGGs to whisper-quiet clitoral vibrators, this shift has led to a greater investment in the sexual wellness market and resulted in a growing wave of better-designed pleasure toys with better aesthetics and enhanced stimulation and sensations for the user. As sex toys become more commonplace and openly discussed, there is less stigma associated with them. Their integration into movies, TV shows, and social media has further normalized their use and increased their general awareness.

The growth of sex toys shows no signs of slowing down, especially in online sales, which generally exceed those of physical stores, due to the convenience of discreet browsing, purchasing, and delivery.

Adachi, added, "The interest and curiosity in searching for pleasure products online confirms the importance of pleasure items as an essential element of self-care and sexual wellness. Tenga’s brand story has always been 'to make sexuality something anyone can enjoy,' which means just as we sleep right, eat well, and take care of our bodies, masturbation should be another part of our total self-care routine. Tenga's aim is that by changing people’s perception of sexual matters, individuals will live a richer and more fulfilled life without feeling any sort of shame or embarrassment."
