MUNICH—Ahead of International Women's Day on March 8, pleasure-based sex-education platform Beducated finds that, "despite decades of progress in gender equality, the "Orgasm Gap" remains persistent," a company representative said.
"Recent research revealed a disparity in straight men who are nearly twice as likely to orgasm during partnered sex as their female partners, but when women are alone, that gap vanishes entirely. The problem is not that women are unable to orgasm, it’s that their pleasure isn’t being prioritized. Women climax just as often as men when masturbating, yet in heterosexual encounters, many struggle to advocate for their needs," the representative added.
Mariah Freya, CEO of Beducated, said, "Women’s pleasure has been treated as secondary for far too long. Our research shows that women know exactly what they need to orgasm but when they’re with a partner, they hesitate to speak up. Many have been conditioned to see their pleasure as an afterthought, or worse, to fake it to avoid hurting their partner’s ego."
Beducated’s studies found that 58 percent of women have faked an orgasm (nearly three times more than men), most commonly to spare their partner’s feelings or because they felt pressured to "perform" pleasure. At the heart of the issue, the company said, is a lack of education, communication, and understanding. According to Beducated:
• Sex education fails to teach pleasure. Only 3 percent of the respondents said their sex ed classes covered pleasure, leaving most people without the confidence to discuss what feels good.
• Penetration is still the focus. Despite overwhelming evidence that most women need clitoral stimulation to reach orgasm, mainstream narratives shaped by porn and Hollywood, continue to frame vaginal intercourse as the gold standard of satisfying sex.
• Women aren’t encouraged to communicate their needs. Many women fear that asking for what they want will make them seem demanding, difficult, or ungrateful.
Freya added, "Sexuality evolves throughout our lives. The more we learn, explore, and adapt, the better our experiences become. Pleasure isn’t just a luxury - it’s a right, and it’s time that we start recognizing it as such."
