Prior to winning AVN’s Best Director (Video) award in January 2005, and joining Wicked Pictures' elite team of superstar directors later that spring, Minneapolis native David Stanley had already established himself as a pivotal member of the adult film scene. This dynamic writer and director had made a name for himself as a talented visual artist who’d turned a love for the independent film scene of the 90s into a successful career as an adult filmmaker. In his two years with Wicked Pictures, he has managed to refine and redefine not only his own gifts, but Wicked's image as a company focused on creating couples-friendly yet edgy erotic entertainment as well.
A true child of the 1970s, Stanley has a peerless knowledge of film history, and is quick to cite everyone from Stanley Kubrick and Terrence Malick to horror specialists Tobe Hooper and Eli Roth as influences on his work. The mark of these filmmakers was immediately evident in his first show for Wicked, the dark Nicole Sheridan vehicle "Polarity."
Yet while this offbeat production certainly laid bare Stanley's predilection for exploring (and at times reveling) in the dark side of human nature, it also revealed a talent for wrangling almost savagely exotic sex performances from his talented actresses, especially blonde hardbody Alexis Malone.
Although influenced by the mainstream, this maverick director is quick to point out that he made a very deliberate choice to work in adult entertainment, and especially for Wicked Pictures, asserting, “If you have a tremendous ambition to say something healthy and provocative about sexuality, this is the best place to be.”
As a fiercely independent writer and director, David Stanley brings a unique vision and a genuine love of storytelling to the Wicked family through such finely wrought releases as "Duality," "Harlequin," and "Crème Brulee."
This last title saw the director reaching a new level of economy in his skill as a storyteller, coaxing a delightfully spirited performance from luminous Wicked Girl jessica drake while deftly and simultaneously juggling the many demands of an unusually complex screenplay.
Similarly, the filmmaker's Kirsten Price vehicle "Just Like That" proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that the visual style and economy of storytelling found in his work with jessica drake was no one-time fluke. In addition to snaring the electrifying Price a 2007 AVN Award nomination for Best Actress - Video, the film also earned Stanley 2007 noms for Best Screenplay and Best Sex Comedy.
His dynamic Carmen Hart vehicle, "1000 Words" received similar attention from AVN, including nominations for Best Director - Video, Best Video Feature, and Best Editing - Video. 2007 finds this dynamic artist in a uniquely powerful place in the adult entertainment market. The controversial skills that have made him an AVN award-winning director have been wedded to a personal growth and artistic maturity that can be seen in such releases as the Jenna Presley vehicle "Lady Of The Evening."
Simply put, David Stanley is a matchless creator of new millennium erotica that stimulates the mind and spirit, as well as the body.
