Vivid Entertainment is preparing to kick off its new Burn-to-DVD service on Monday, allowing users to download features from its Web site and burn them onto a standard DVD disk.
Vivid co-chairman Steven Hirsch told Wired News today that the service is as easy as pressing a button to download and then burn.
The service costs $25 per feature or about the same as a traditional DVD, complete with a DVD menu, chapter navigation and other interactive features available on the original DVD title.
But the system allows the user to burn the title just once, thanks to a proprietary software included with the title.
The Burn-to-DVD software will be offered by All Adult Channel, which developed the proprietary burn-limiting software.
Vivid is selling 30 titles through the service in standard definition DVD quality, but Hirsch says high definition titles will soon be available since the company shoots about 80 percent of its titles in hi def.
Vivid’s service is yet another chapter in the struggle between Blu-ray and HD DVD standards, which remains to be resolved. Proponents of both claim to be the next step in video technology.
