Universal Pictures has agreed to distribute an unrated documentary from Imagine Entertainment about the most profitable independent movie of all time – Deep Throat.
According to the Daily Variety, Inside Deep Throat will include interviews with Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson, Carl Bernstein, Hugh Hefner, Norman Mailer, Gore Vidal and John Waters, as producer Brian Grazer searches for what made the 1972 adult film starring Linda Lovelace into the huge cross over hit.
"There were 50 years, at least, of pornography that preceded Deep Throat. Deep Throat had a great title and it celebrated the right iconic act -- it celebrated a blowjob," Grazer said. "Because of the title and what it successfully celebrated, it became the most litigated, most profitable movie ever."
Directed by Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato of World of Wonder, Inside Deep Throat examines the cultural impact of the 1972 porn classic, in addition to digging up dirt around the movie, including revealing how anti-porn crusaders were responsible for lining the pockets of Mafia enforcers.
It could be argued that the fact that Imagine Entertainment, better known for big budget comedies and dramas, is involved with the documentary at any level is proof enough of the film's cultural significance.
The documentary will include graphic sex scenes, which will limit the distribution of the unrated film.
"It's provocative, of course," Grazer told Variety. "We have to include archival footage that makes it unrated. It's the accident of the skill of Linda Lovelace that turned a movie called The Nurses into a movie called Deep Throat that then became a cultural phenomenon."
The documentary was financed in part by HBO.
