UK Residents Protest Prospective Strip Club

Area churchgoers have recently joined the campaign to block a planned strip club from opening in the center of the UK town.

A recently published story in the Oldham Advertiser reported that a proposal to open up a gentlemen’s club in the area, which has been given the green light by Oldham's licensing panel, has provoked a critical response from local conservatives.

The proposed site for the adult club, called Legends, is next door to St. Paul's Methodist Church. Its minister, the Rev. Eddie Gordon, told the Oldham Advertiser, “My main objection is the location of the club.

“But we wanted to find out about what our church members thought so on Sunday they signed a petition supporting an appeal by Oldham Youth Service against the licensing panel's decision.”

An action committee has also been organized to support any appeal against the granting of the license.

Chancellor Diane Williamson, chairman of Shaw and Crompton Parish Council, also voiced objection to the club. Williamson told the Oldham Advertiser, "This is not about whether lap dancing clubs are a good thing or not. They may well have their place in society. But my real concern…is the location of this particular club.”

Club owners accused opponents of the lap dancing club of being "scaremongers," and said that no area residents or authorities have complained.
