U.K. Sex Worker's Get Union Representation

The GMB Union, a generalized union that represents both unskilled and skilled labor in a number of fields, has created a special branch to represent porn stars, strippers, and prostitutes.

GMB has begun a recruitment drive among sex industry workers offering them legal protection from harassment, violence, threats, intimidation and theft.

The GMB's head of equal rights, Karen Constantine said the decision to extend its services to the sex industry was made at a women's conference earlier this month.

"These are the most marginalised group of workers in the UK with little or no rights," said Constantine, noting that there are at least 10,000 people involved in the sex business in London alone.

The union claims to have has already negotiated a "satisfactory outcome" in a case involving strippers who believed they were being short-changed by the operators of a club in London's Docklands. For a related story, click here.
