Tristan Taormino loves to teach, and it shows. The author and director is set to release her latest offering, Tristan Taormino's Expert Guide to Anal Sex, the first movie from the Vivid-Ed imprint of Vivid Entertainment. The title hits stores on Thursday.
"It's sex education for a new generation," Taormino told AVN.com. "We created this movie to enrich the lives of the people that see it. Whether they are beginners, want to go beyond the basics, or are sophisticated about sex, we believe that they will thoroughly enjoy it. After giving more than one hundred lectures to audiences across the country about anal sex, I have a good idea of what people want to know and the demonstrations they want to see."
A popular Village Voice columnist, Taormino is also the author of "The Ultimate Guide to Anal Sex for Women" which was recently released in a second, revised edition by Cleis Press. In 2000, she co-directed and performed in a hardcore video adaptation of the book for Evil Angel that won AVN's Best Anal-Themed Feature award. The busy director added another trophy to her collection this year when her reality-porn extravaganza Chemistry won Best Gonzo at the 2007 AVN Awards.
Tristan Taormino's Expert Guide to Anal Sex features an innovative workshop taught by Taormino, with demonstrations by two co-hosts followed by three scenes where couples show specific techniques, positions and sex toys. The director explained that the casting process for the title was crucial, snagging the likes of Lorelei Lee, Ariel X, Adrianna Nicole, Manuel Ferrara, Marcos Leon and Ricki White.
"I wanted performers who were smart and articulate, because they were going to be chiming in and adding their personal input and techniques," Taormino said. "I wanted to get people with natural bodies…not performers with that over-the-top porn aesthetic."
The scenes are narrated by Taormino and feature on-screen graphics that highlight creative tips and tricks to help guide the viewer in the learning experience. Taking advantage of the interactive qualities of the DVD, the movie is presented in an innovative new format where viewers can choose to watch the scenes with or without the instruction.
"It's like getting two movies on one disc," said Howard Levine, head of Vivid sales at Pulse Distribution. "You can watch it first to learn then watch the scenes for pure enjoyment."
The DVD also includes featurettes on safe sex and anal hygiene and a bonus girl/girl scene.
"Tristan brings an entirely new dimension to her subject and sex education will never be the same," continued Levine. "She really brings sex education up-to-speed for a new generation by providing honest information and explicit techniques, all in an accessible, entertaining way. Couples who want to know more about this intimate act that was once seen as taboo are going to hear it from the expert herself."
Taormino said that she created titles like Tristan Taormino's Expert Guide to Anal Sex for what she calls "porn-shy" viewers. "I just want to let everybody know up front, there won't be any ten people, all-anal gang bangs in my stuff," Taormino laughed.
The director's next project for the Vivid-Ed imprint will be an educational title on cunnilingus.
