LOS ANGELES—AVN Hall of Famer Tommy Gunn and award-winning director Joel Van der Molen pull back the curtain on the adult industry with new documentary Fans Only: The Human Side of Porn.
With commentary from stars like Alexis Texas, Cherie DeVille, Emma Hix, Alexis Fawx, Danny Mountain, James Bartholet and more, the 1-hour, 10-minute production dives into the two sides of the industry—the fun, open and supportive community, alongside the tougher realities that don’t always make it to the surface. Through interviews with both performers and people working behind the scenes, it sheds light on challenges like stigma, mental and physical health struggles, and juggling busy shooting schedules with family life and the pressures of social media.
“This project with Joel was a terrific experience,” Gunn said. “We took a lot of time to really try and get the whole picture, in an objective way, and I think it works. It’s an honest look inside our industry, and I’m proud to be a part of it.”
Fans Only includes insights from industry voices like Peter Warren, Dan Miller, Holly Randall, Brah Bones and others, giving viewers a deeper look at how the industry works and the challenges its members face. The movie tackles topics like gender health, the pressures of platforms like OnlyFans, and the societal outcasting that still exists.
Van der Molen, a veteran director who was awarded the SIFFA President Award for his hit documentary Gypsy Billionaire, which reached #1 on Amazon Prime, shared his excitement about the project, saying, “This documentary was something I had wanted to do for a long time. Once I met up with Tommy and sorted all the details, the film took on a life of its own, leading us in directions I hadn’t dreamt of. I’m excited for people, industry-related and otherwise, to see what we put together. It’s real and it’s honest. I’m thrilled with everyone’s contributions and the final product we have!”
