It's enough that many people think there's something fishy about porn. Now a group of Swiss scientists says the male stickleback gets his stickle up for an aquatic equivalent of adult entertainment.
Stickleback mating involves a male building a nest and then courting a female until she's aroused enough to lay eggs in the nest. The male then ejaculates over the eggs to fertilize them. But if he feels threatened by nearby competitors, he might ejaculate more in order to bump his chances of being the father first to the most.
Enter University of Friboug researchers who decided to boost the process by showing the males a pair of animations – one showing a "sexy" film of a male courting a female, the other showing a male caring for his offspring, said online.ie.
You guessed it: the "sexy" animation provoked more sperm ejaculated over a female's eggs, after a female was introduced following the showing of the two animations, and especially if one male thought the others were lining up to give him a little competition.
