Two strip clubs are say they plan to file a lawsuit this week over a measure that would outlaw lap dances.
The lawyers of Babe’s Cabaret and Skin Cabaret say they object to the language in Proposition 401 because it’s misleading and because it does not tell voters that it would regulate “cabarets,” the East Valley Tribune reported today.
The measure asks voters to uphold a ban on lap dances passed by the City Council last December.
Measure proponents say the legislation is needed to maintain high community standards and reign in adult-oriented businesses.
“This referendum is not about two ‘innocent’ strip clubs," wrote local resident John Nichols in a voter education pamphlet. "Rather the pornography industry seeks to achieve a more permissive ordinance allowing for a major expansion of these businesses in Scottsdale.”
The strip clubs have said the city’s tough new regulations would likely put them out of business. The two clubs have been operating in the city for decades.
