Former Creed singer Scott Stapp is suing Red Light District over a sex video showing himself and fellow rocker Kid Rock having sex with groupies.
The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles against the Chatsworth-based company, is similar to one filed by Rock last month in Detroit. Stapp’s suit is seeking to bar Red Light from distributing or selling the video, his attorneys said today.
In his suit, Stapp claims that two tapes he described as “video diary” of his 1999 concert tour were stolen from a safe at his house and seeks a restraining order to stop the video’s distribution. The suit alleges that Red Light violated trademark and privacy rights, causing public embarrassment, pain and suffering and seeks unspecified damages.
Red Light attorney Ray Tamaddon said the company obtained the tapes legally and that it’s within its rights to sell or distribute the tape.
“We obtained the tape from a lawful owner which wasn’t Mr. Stapp,” Tamaddon said, noting that he had not seen the lawsuit.
“If you’re a rock star and are having sex in front of a number of strangers in front of a camera in a place accessible by strangers, then you don’t have an expectation of privacy which is the standard under the law.”
The company has said it obtained the tapes legally and that it’s within its rights to sell or distribute the tape.
Just two weeks ago an unnamed woman who claims she was one of the tape’s participants, sued Red Light, claiming she has suffered emotional distress and had her privacy invaded when the sex tape was acquired by the company.
The tape is said to show four women engaging in oral sex with the two rockers on a tour bus near Miami in 1999.
