Something’s Fishy: The Little Mermaid Gets a Dildo

She’s been decapitated twice; she’s had a bra and panties painted on her. She’s had her right arm cut off, been dumped into the sea, and in 2004 she was covered in a burka and forced to wear a sash that read “Turkey in the EU?”

Being a national symbol is never easy, but things can be downright humiliating if the symbol is the Little Mermaid statue that guards the port of Copenhagen at Langelinie Pier.

Vandals had a whack at the little gal once again last Wednesday, spattering her with green paint and adorning her with a dildo.

Deputy Police Commissioner Peter Steffensen said, “We are taking this very seriously, because one cannot accept vandalism, not on the Little Mermaid or any other public statue.”

Steffensen said that investigators have no leads as to the identities of the perpetrators. The only clue left behind was the phrase “8 marts,” which vandals apparently scrawled across the granite base of the statue. The date, which in Danish means “March 8,” is an apparent reference to International Women’s Day.

On Thursday the statue was cleaned and the dildo was removed.

The Little Mermaid, as always, had no comment.
