Rural Communities Battle Adult Stores

Jackson County residents have joined local officials in an effort to close down an adult video store.

Several protesters have been picketing outside the Lion’s Den on a daily basis, carrying signs and videotaping customers, the Courier Journal reported.

County commissioners had filed suit against the store’s owners for violating regulations that require adult businesses to have special permits to operate as well as other restrictions. The new regulations were passed three days before the store opened after officials learned the “truck stop” would also sell adult videos.

Officials in five rural communities in Kentucky and Indiana have been battling adult stores in the courts for the past three years, making the current issue just the latest in a series of court actions against adult store owners.

Rodney Farrow, an attorney for Jackson County, claimed adult store owners prey on rural communities because they don’t have the resources to battle them.
