Red Light District Taps James Avalon for First Film Project

Red Light District, whose brand is synonymous with hard gonzo porn, has signed award-winning director James Avalon to direct the first of a new line of features for Red Light District Films.

“I think there’s still room for good features in the adult market,” Red Light owner David Joseph told AVN.com. He plans to launch the first in late August-early September.

“We’re going to do one a month, and they’ll all be on High Definition. We immediately looked to James Avalon because he’s one of the best feature directors out there. And of course he’ll have access to all of our great male contract performers.”

Avalon, an AVN and XRCO Hall of Famer, told AVN.com that he thinks hardcore features are still a viable medium. “You’ve got to have a sense for it,” he said, “and good stories. Features got a bad reputation because a lot of them were basically gonzos pretending to be features, without real stories.”

The working title, he said, is Dark Sideways. The story involves two different points of view—“which I’ve done a lot”—and revolves around an implant that turns ordinary women into raging nymphos. He said that visually it will be in “peak James Avalon style.”

“Look, story and mood, they all have to be integrated,” he said. “And keep the sex hot and nasty, in the Red Light tradition.” He added that he and Red Light see eye to eye on matters like budget and artistic control. “They want their movies to come out good—so they can sell them. I like dealing with a company that feels that way.”

He plans to start shooting early in May.

Avalon was named AVN’s Best Director - Film of 2000 for Metro’s Les Vampyres, which was awarded Best Film by the XRCO. His most recent feature work has been for Sin City, which just released Harlot with Aurora Snow.
