Pure Pleasure Store Secures License, Opens

The Pure Pleasure Megacenter adult book and video store has obtained its business license and is open after an extended legal battle, according to a report in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Still, an opposition group contends that the store promotes porn in an otherwise tame retail location, which includes a neighboring furniture store and lighting and ceiling fan shop, the report said. Adding an X-rated book and video store to that area could attract criminals there, the group says.

Bryan Menke, a spokesman for the group, said it would ask local prosecutors to bring obscenity charges against the store for some of the materials it sells, the Post-Dispatch said. He said group members also might picket the store and try to discourage customers from entering it.

Don Kleinhans, owner and operator of the Pure Pleasure store and five others in Kentucky and Florida, has dismissed the group’s complaints, the newspaper reported.

Circuit Judge Gary Kramer ordered the temporary shutdown of the store last week after ruling that it should not have opened without a license. The judge also urged Crystal City officials to move quickly on the store's appeal of Mayor Tom Schilly's denial of a business license. According to the story, Schilly had rejected the license request over concerns about lack of a floor plan and inadequate lighting at the adult store. Kleinhans said those concerns had since been addressed.
