Porn-Free Hotels Rise in Sweden

A growing number of Swedish hotels are canceling their subscriptions to adult entertainment television channels, according to the Swedish women's refuge group ROKS. The organization says that almost 500 Swedish hotels have gone porn free, and more are likely to join them.

ROKS publishes listings of the porn-free hotels in a newly released catalogue the group said came as a result of consumer demand.

"Since the first catalogue came out in spring 2003, the interest in booking porn-free hotels has increased among government departments, councils and organizations," ROKS project leader Tina Olby told reporters. "Those who are opposed to hotels which offer porn to their guests say that [porn-free hotels] are an obvious part of working towards equality in the workplace."

Among those choosing to travel porn free, according to a published report, is the Swedish military. Other authorities, according to ROKS, are doing likewise, with 101 or 176 local authorities booking porn-free hotel accommodations when they need to travel and others planning to discuss the issue.

Other travelers who prefer not to see adult material on their hotel room television sets can now check the website, CleanHotels.com, which produces user-provided listings of U.S. hotels that do not offer porn.

At this writing, CleanHotels.com listed 26 porn-free hotels in Los Angeles, eight in New York, 14 in Miami, and seven in Washington, D.C., in addition to listings for other cities.

"Our primary purpose is to provide a service through which friends like you can book a room for your vacation, business trip, or meeting with the expectation, first, that you and your family or associates will not be exposed to pornographic movies and secondly, that you will be supporting a facility that cares enough about the well-being of its customers not to make harmful pornographic movies available," CleanHotels.com says on its site.
