SAN FRANCISCO—Pink & White Productions has released French documentary film Remote Sex Work (Teletravail du Sexe) by Avec Les Doigts and co-directed by Carmina and Prune, on its streaming platform PinkLabel.TV. The documentary profiles the lives and work of French online sex workers PetiteXSirene, Aspasie, Vera Flynn, Swann Purple and Inopia.
"Am I a worse mother than someone who does another job? No. They have food, clothes, toys, and above all—they have love," content creator PetiteXSirene shared.
“March 2020: France is in lockdown to curb the COVID-19 epidemic," reads a plot synopsis. "The French find themselves working from home, some on partial or full unemployment. A few freelancers even lose their entire business. More and more people turn to online sex work to make up for the loss of income. The media quickly seize on the topic, and numerous articles surface, treating the subject superficially to capitalize on the buzz. Influencers ride the wave of the social network OnlyFans' popularity, seeing it as an opportunity to 'clean up its image' and get rid of adult content to go public. Through this, the general public discovers a whole series of jobs they knew little or nothing about—adult content creators, porn actors, cam girls, fetish models, etc. In 2021, a documentary on 'amateur porn' and the rise of platforms like OnlyFans even airs on France TV Slash. However, sex workers feel quite poorly about being used once again for clicks, and having their stories told by outsiders who distort their words. This adds to an already hostile context for several years, particularly with the FOSTA-SESTA laws passed in 2018 in the United States, and the recent restrictions imposed by financial institutions. Sex work is constantly denigrated, questioned, and used as a political argument by conservative parties and religious lobbies. This remains the case in France.”
“External perspectives often impose a view distorted by clichés and fantasies, and even less objective representation of French online sex workers," the synopsis continues. "With this context fueling desires to put their production skills to use, Carmina and Prune came together to produce their own documentary film on the subject. The pair secured production support by launching a crowdfunding campaign on the platform Ulule, where their goal was met with a celebrated 123 percent success.”
