Older Men Are More Satisfied with Sex Lives

A new survey says middle aged and older men are generally more satisfied with their sex lives than women in their same age group, Reuters reported today.

A survey of 27,500 people around the world conducted by the University of Chicago and published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior showed that the majority of people who are married or have a partner, remain sexually active into old age.

The survey found that a great proportion of people in Europe, North America and Australia enjoy sex, both physically and emotionally while a smaller percentage of people enjoyed satisfying sex lives in poorer countries whose cultures were male dominated.

Edward Laumann, the survey’s lead researcher, said that there was a systematic disparity between the sexes where men reported higher levels of satisfaction with their sex lives.

About two thirds of adults in Western countries reported that they were extremely satisfied with their sex lives, though some countries showed lesser levels of satisfaction. In Austria, for instance, four out of five older adults said they were extremely happy with their sex lives while a fewer percentage of those were reported in France and Sweden.

In the U.S., about three quarters of men and two-thirds of women were pleased with the emotional and physical aspects of their sex lives.

But in Japan, about 18 percent of men and 10 percent of women surveyed responded positively about their sex lives. In Taiwan, just 7 percent of the women reported that sex was very important.
