Oh, Canada! Young Canucks Turning on to Virtual Sex

A recent poll of more than 2,500 Canadian college and university students revealed that 87 percent of the sons and daughters of the Maple Leaf Flag are turning on to phone, instant message, and webcam sex.

“We were very surprised,” said Noah Gurza, a founder of Toronto-based CampusKiss.com, an online dating community for college students, which commissioned a Canadian CampusKiss & Tell Survey. “We did realize that new technologies are always embraced by younger individuals, but we didn’t think it would’ve reached such a high number.”

Gurza rationalized that since most college-age Canadians have grown up with computer technology, it’s only natural that it would become entwined with their sex lives.

“It’s now extended within their sexual world, whether it be as a social lubricant as a means to then engage in something that’s more real, in more real time, or if it’s just a means in itself of pleasuring here and there,” he said, apparently oblivious to the double entendre inherent in his use of the word “lubricant.”

Roughly 2,684 students from more than 150 Canadian universities and colleges took part in the survey. Fifty-one percent of the participants were female and 49 percent were male.

Of those surveyed, 53 percent of students said they enjoyed sex more than instant messenger, while 44 percent preferred using a webcam or the telephone.

When it comes to having actual sex, 87 percent of those polled claimed to be sober at the time. Ninety percent of students who responded said their campus promotes and supports safe-sex practices.
