Tom Funk has started High-Def XXX, a multi-faceted company that he hopes will help to accommodate an anticipated surge of adult producers utilizing the technology in the coming months and years.
High-Def XXX is a producer, distributor and a post-production house. Funk, who left an extensive background in the IT field for adult, said that High-Def Home Entertainment would be his distribution arm. His company will also include three divisions: High-Def Gonzo, High-Def Lesbians and High-Def Erotica.
“I provide High-Definition DVDs, both my own and for others who have shot High-Definition,” Funk told AVN.com. “We’ve got about 20 titles coming in between my own productions and others that I’ve helped put into the High-Def DVD format.
“Antigua Pictures is going to do some of our domestic distribution and then we’re developing full output that will include High-Def DVD, High-Def clips, and domestic High-Def broadcasts. Antigua is going to do our European distribution. We have a deal with Japan for distribution of High-Def DVDs there. They actually have set-top, High-Def DVD players. They will be released here in the U.S. in about two months.”
Funk encoded and authored Digital Playground’s Island Fever 3, which came out in 2004 as a double-disc set that includes both a standard-def DVD and a High-Def DVD. He also encoded Adam & Eve/Ultimate Pictures’ Rawhide.
Funk has already released High-Def XXX, Vol. 1, and Easy Like Sunday Morning from his own company.
“We’re also doing features with Antigua that Buck Adams is producing,” Funk said, referring to Adams’ upcoming Beach Patrol, and A.G.P. “We are doing the post-production in High-Def. They will be released soon.”
Funk said that his research indicates there will be 50 million High-Def TVs in U.S. households by the end of 2008, creating what he believes will be a significant demand for adult content in that format.
“Anyone who spends the money on HDTV will know and want the difference,” he said.
“It’s all a learning process, but what happened was I spent the past year developing the technology and developing our work flow, and building up our equipment list. And then I had basically been planning on doing this distribution company for quite a while. I’m timing our big release of everything with the players.”
