John Haltom has pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor obscenity charge in order to avoid the possibility of a year in jail.
Haltom, the owner of the Doctor John’s adult novelty chain, was charged with a misdemeanor count of distributing obscene material. He was fined $1,000, plus court costs.
Haltom’s lawyer told KSLTV, the area’s NBC affiliate, that Haltom agreed to plead to the count in exchange for receiving only a fine.
The obscenity charge that Haltom pleaded no contest to today was brought just one month after he was released from jail after serving six months for a separate obscenity charge. Haltom’s attempt to have the current obscenity charge dismissed on the basis that he had been in jail at the time the misdemeanor took place was denied.
Haltom owns ten adult stores in five states throughout the Midwest, and is waging legal battles in at least three of those states.
