Massachusetts Town Eyes Adult Store Restrictions

City Council members are considering regulations aimed at adult entertainment businesses after community members complained of a proposal to bring an adult video and novelty store to the community.

Council members said this week that new regulations were needed to deal with the potential issues adult businesses could bring to the city such as a proposal by Capitol Video Corporation which plans to establish an adult video store along King Street here, the Hampshire Gazette reported.

At a recent public hearing some locals voiced their concern about Capitol Video’s plans to incorporate 20 private viewing booths for customers to see adult videos. They also cited worries about the impact the sale of adult materials would have on the community.

The council had recently rejected the company's business license application due in part to concerns over the viewing booths and to zoning issues. Capitol Video has since agreed to remove the booths from its proposal and has also agreed to reduce the size of its building to meet parking requirements on the city’s zoning code.

But Suzanne L. Beck, the executive director of the Northampton Chamber of Commerce, said she is concerned about its location, which she described as the gateway to the downtown area.

A decision on the amended business application is still pending.
