Man Pleads Guilty in Federal Obscenity Case

A Shreveport man pleaded guilty Monday to federal charges that he distributed obscene materials and other related charges.

Daniel Smart admitted to the court that he had sold obscene videos and DVDs out of his home.

Smart’s plea capped a long investigation that culminated in the seizure of thousands of videos and DVDs involving bestiality and bondage, according to KTBS-TV in Shreveport.

Assistant District Attorney Hugo Holland said federal officials became involved in the investigation when it was learned the material had crossed state lines, making it a federal crime.

Smart came to the attention of authorities after someone e-mailed state police when they recognized an actress in a video that depicted a murder. The anonymous source apparently feared the actress was in actual danger and called police. After it was discovered that the actress had not been killed in the video and was not in danger, the investigators went after Smart and expanded the investigation into a mini-task force.

Smart is scheduled for sentencing on Oct. 3. He faces up to five years in prison.
