Internet statistics provider Ipwalk announced on Friday that DotMobi (dot-mobi), the new top-level domain, saw a sizable number of registrations in the first two days of its 70 day sunrise period. The sunrise period is when owners of intellectual property can register domain names. Sunrise period for dot-mobi registration began June 12.
Within those first two days, major brands secured their trademarks, among them: Virgin, Target, eBay, Ferrari, American Express, Target, Wal-Mart, ESPN, Saab, BMW, Chrysler, Ferrari, Rolex, Ziff Davis Publishing, Dolce & Gabbana, and more. According to the DotMobi registry, approximately 5,000 domain names were registered during the first 48 hours.
During a limited sunrise period in May, mobile companies and mobile content providers, as well as film and TV companies like CNN, Fox and Warner Brothers, registered domain names. Roughly 2,000 domain names were registered during this period, according to the registry.
“There is a trend among companies to go directly to the consumer,” says Alexa Raad, Dotmobi’s vice president of marketing and business development. “They are opening up the gates, reaching consumers more efficiently. It’s all about channel building. These companies want to build their brands beyond the PC or the newspapers.”
