Hoping it will help keep teenagers from being inadvertently exposed to adult materials online, LinuxElectrons has launched a "Teens on Linux" forum aimed at furthering teen knowledge of open source technology options and computers in general while helping them avoid the traps and troubles known to be associated with other online forums.
"The [Teens on Linux] forum will be a great stopping point on the Internet for teens interested in Linux," said LinuxElectrons senior managing editor Robert Thomas, announcing the forum. "TOL will provide a safe and secure hangout for teens to gather, share and relate their experiences with Linux and computers in general."
"We can just hang out and talk about Linux or other computer stuff," said the 13-year-old forum moderator, known publicly as LinuxGirl – who is also Thomas' daughter. "We don't have to talk about Linux at all if you don't want. I just want to learn more about Linux myself."
LinuxElectrons hopes it will prove a safe teen hangout free from viruses, porn, and other problems teenage Netizens run into at such destinations as Internet Relay Chat and other message boards, forums, peer-to-peer networks, and instant message programs.
"Parents can be at ease," LinuxElectrons said, "knowing that their teen will not be exposed to adult content or other dangers while surfing at the TOL forum."
