Library Pulls Magazine Over Nude Cover

Librarians from the San Luis Obispo city and county libraries last week pulled a free local magazine from their shelves because it contained a painting of a nude woman on its cover.

The director of the city and San Luis Obispo City and County libraries, said the issue of HopeDance magazine was removed because he was uncomfortable with the image on the cover, he told KCOY-TV Monday.

But Bob Banner, the magazine's publisher said his magazine is not pornographic even though the issue contains more artwork as well as articles on pornography and sexual dysfunction.

Banner said his magazine was trying to deal with sex in a “holistic and celebratory” way and not to titillate.

Library system officials would not comment on the matter citing potential litigation.

But Banner said he did not plan to sue the library system but simply wanted to be reimbursed for the number of magazines that were thrown out.
