Miss Phat Booty from In-Depth Productions, just shipped from Juicy Entertainment, is the fourth title John E. Depth has produced for the company, and they anticipate bigger than usual numbers with it, according to sales manager Marty Turkel.
Turkel told AVN.com that Depth’s four Juicy releases have all been well received by distributors, retailers and consumers.
Though best known as talent, appearing in just about every black and interracial series in the industry, Depth has been producing his own shows since last summer. His first In-Depth release from Juicy, Capital Punishment, snagged an AVN nomination as Best Interracial Release of 2004.
Miss Phat Booty is a specialty product — “Girls with big butts,” Depth told AVN.com. “I know there’s other series out there like that, but I’m bringing something different to the table.”
One main attraction is the actress Sin Starr, a black favorite who made a comeback for Depth after a hiatus from the industry. Other girls include Unique and Sydnee Capri. All three are on the box cover.
Depth said his biggest seller so far is Spinal Tap. “My slogan on that,” he said, “was ‘See your favorite porn stars fucked to pieces.’” The second volume, Spinal Tap 2, will ship at the end of March.
He also did a pro-am feature shot on the East Coast, Newcummers N2 Deep, with all first-timers.
“Basically I started out in the Washington D.C. area, more or less amateur,” he said. “Then I started doing stuff in New York, got popular there, got a little name base in the metro area. I was always shooting my own thing and I was distributing it out of my car. I was taking them to stores, I was calling distributors. My numbers, out of my trunk, were like 2,000. I was just pushin’ it.
“To be an owner and do my own thing — I’ve always had that in the back of my mind. But coming out here, it kind of solidified that and everything came together.”
At the East Coast Video show he met black actress Kitten, who assured him he could find lots of work in Porn Valley. At first he was a bicoastal commuter, but relocated to Los Angeles in 2003.
“I came out here and settled down in 2003. The commute back and forth was killing me. Everybody was like, okay, if you’re gonna do this shit, you stay out here.”
As a performer, he has worked for many companies as a performer, most notably West Coast Productions and the Forefront Entertainment titles from Hustler Video, but he always had his eye on producing his own.
“A lot of people were like, well, it’s about time you did your own thing. I think a lot of it is timing. I just wanted to build my name a little more, and then once I got to a point, okay, I think I’m known well enough to go out on my own.”
It was actress-director Diana Devoe who brought him to Juicy, where In-Depth Productions now fills the slot for black and interracial product. (Devoe directed Capital Punishment, as well as two scenes in Miss Phat Booty.)
Juicy, he said, gave In-Depth the kind of big distribution it needed, helped in no small measure by the sharp and experienced veteran who’s in charge of sales.
“Marty is awesome,” Depth said. “I’m happy with Juicy.”
After Spinal Tap 2 he is readying Capital Punishment 2 for release, and he figures to keep Miss Phat Booty going as a permanent line.
“I have other titles coming out,” he added. “I’m working on one called In Depth Riders, a Western.”
