Israel Wants Porn Restrictions On Mobile Phones

Israel's Communications Ministry has amended mobile phone operators' licenses to restrict porn access, after complaints that too many children were getting hold of such material, the ministry announced December 26.

In an official statement, the ministry said they would restrict mobile phone porn transmission—including video clips and cell phone movies using high-speed, third-generation networks—to adults who enter codes and are identified positively as adults.

Israel's Communications Minister, Ehud Olmert, said his ministry moved after complaints that minors were seeing "erotic and pornographic material" and hearing with mobile phone providers in the country.

Israel itself has four mobile phone operators, Cellcom, Partner, Pelephone, and Mirs. Pelephone is owned by Bezeq Israel Telecom, while Mirs is owned by Motorola and Ampal-American Israel Corp.

Combined, the Communications Ministry said, the operators have almost seven million Israeli subscribers, many of whom are believed to be children and teens.
