This prototypically American, Silicon Valley town is the home of Zygote, Inc., publishers of SEXlife magazine, reviewed here in AVN (very favorably) in our May '98 issue. It is now also harboring the eye-rolling frustration that is linked, arm-in-arm, with that most prototypical American standard: repression. \n SEXlife has made it past the treacherous one-year mark, and though it has been praised by Planned Parenthood, GLAAD, the Society for Human Sexuality, and the American Social Health Association; even though its first issue managed a 90% sell rate at Tower; even though circulation has doubled over the printing of four issues; you're going to have a hard time tracking down a copy of your very own. \n There seems to be a censorial resistance to distribution of this publication, described by The San Diego Union-Tribune as "downright wholesome, with very PG dating stories and lots of earnest medical updates." Apparently some stores carrying mags like Penthouse refuse to carry SEXlife. Publisher Elaine Quon noted, "Drug stores sell condoms, lubricants and birth control products. Are they saying it's acceptable to have sex, but not acceptable to learn about it?" Imagine. \n Those interested in receiving this Gen X-targeted, informational, unique magazine can contact national distributor Rider Circulation Services at (213) 344-1200.
