Good Vibrations Ad Targets SF Commuters

Adult novelty manufacturer Good Vibrations is running an advertisement in the San Francisco Bay Guardian and East Bay Press, offering a "sexy solution to the stressful MacArthur Maze situation."

The MacArthur Maze is a traffic distribution structure where three major highways converge at the Bay Bridge carrying approximately 280,000 commuters per day. A portion of the Maze overpass collapsed on April 29, when fire from a gasoline tanker that crashed melted the structure.

Good Vibrations' advertisement depicts the legs of a woman wearing high heels, with just her legs sticking up from the backseat of a classic convertible. The accompanying caption reads: "Ms. Jones took advantage of the MacArthur Maze congestion to do a little shopping...and she just couldn't wait to get home!"

"We're suggesting drivers take an alternative route and stop by one of our stores," said Steve Duncan, creative director for Good Vibrations. "Our products are designed to relieve stress and provide pleasure. Customers can shop for something fun instead of sitting in their cars, and it gives them something to look forward to when they get home."

Good Vibes' tongue-in-cheek ad appeared in editions of both newspapers, which were delivered to newsstands on May 9. An accompanying sentence on the ad provides an amusing advisory: "Do not use vibrators while operating a vehicle—always pull over first."
