Two years after its server dropped them out of the blue, but resurrecting within a month to the tune of several-thousand loyal fans, British adult Website Girls Kissing UK - "the first, best, and longest-running, non-pornographic girls kissing Website," as they tout on their home page - is gearing up for its fifth birthday in May.
"A significant milestone," is how founder/Webmaster Paul Mallinson put it when queried by AVN.com, four months after the fifth version of the site launched. He said he plans a number of promotions for the site in the runup to the May birthday, not the least of which involves his coming to Los Angeles in early February and staying to live and work through the summer, "shooting porn stars and models kissing.
"I've just moved into a new place in L.A.," Mallinson continued. "It's incredible. So I'm going to be shooting the hottest girls I can find kissing each other, as often as possible. We don't have Jacuzzis here in England, so I'm looking forward to my first hot-tub shoot. We've got some great ideas lined up, so I'm very optimistic about the Website's future."
For the Girls Kissing birthday, he said, Mallinson plans some special shooting at a kissing party in Los Angeles, "with lots of cute porn stars - Jenna Haze, Lauren Phoenix, Jesse V, Violet Blue, (and others)." And he is also hunting a good venue for a Girls Kissing birthday party "with an installed kissing booth" in May. "I already have a number of options," he said, without disclosing details for now. "It's guaranteed to be a hot night, with lots of girl-girl kissing action."
He credits "my friends who all have dirty minds and are forever suggesting kissing shoot ideas" for keeping Girls Kissing fresh after five years. "It's a fun lifestyle, as you can imagine," he said. "Enjoyed both sides of the Atlantic."
Mallinson is also pitching a coffee-table book from the site's first five years to various publishers and has recently signed a deal, he said, with GB Posters, which he called Europe's biggest poster company, for a range of Girls Kissing posters. "I believe GB Posters also has a significant other in North America," he said, "so I also expect to see these new posters in the States and Canada, too."
Mallinson also plans to bring forth a new Webmaster affiliate system around the time of the birthday, with details to come as soon as they are closer to being finalized.
Girls Kissing was born in 1999, with Mallinson's first offering material he shot with "a bunch of friends while out clubbing," having tired of what he calls "lurid adult Websites with uncontrollable pop-ups." The first version featured six hosted galleries and one video.
By November 1999, the site had brought forth its second version, with Maxim soon naming it Website of the Week, calling two girls kissing "one of nature's more wondrous sights." By September 2001, another radical facelift presented the Girls Kissing blue-and-purple color scheme most familiar to its fans and members, and this third version was an immediate hit.
But five months later, the site's longtime hosts, Freeserve, took them down "without a word," as Mallinson puts it. "Thousands of people logged on one day, and the site just wasn't there," he said. "This upset a lot of people. Ourselves included. And still, to this day, we do not know why they did it."
It didn't stop them from launching version four of the site a month later. "Girls Kissing had too many genuine fans to allow the site to die off," Mallinson said. The rebirth was celebrated on The Kevin & Bean Show, a popular Los Angeles breakfast radio program. "And long may the reign of Girls Kissing continue," Maxim commented when the site revived.
Girls Kissing now claims members from all around the world, from Great Britain, the United States, Canada, and Australia to Spain, Ireland, Thailand, South Africa, the Netherlands, Denmark, Israel, Japan, Belgium, Taiwan, New Zealand, Germany, Italy, France, the Palestinian Authority, and "we even had one person join from Iraq."
But while they're often described as a not-quite-pornographic site, Girls Kissing also features images and clips of some of the more famous mainstream girl-girl smooches, from Madonna and Britney Spears's notorious smack at the MTV Awards to Calista Flockhart and Lucy Liu's legendary lock on Ally McBeal, not to mention clips and shots of such celebrities as Sarah Michelle Gellar, Angelina Jolie, Winona Ryder, Liv Tyler, Carmen Electra, Denise Richards and Neve Campbell (Wild Things), Sharon Stone, Jennifer Aniston, and more.
