The Canada Domain Name Exchange Corp. has been told to pony up a $4,000 fine over derivatives of the Law Society of British Columbia's name being used for a porn site.
An August 17 ruling from a British Columbian court found the CDNEC registered lawsocietyofbc.ca and lsbc.ca with the Canadian Internet Registration Authority in November 2000 – but the two names took visitors to adult sites instead.
The CDNEC argued the former name was supposed to reference the Law Society of Barristers Categories and the latter Love Sites By Category, then claimed it only linked the names to adult sites to stir up traffic increase the names' resale values, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Company – arguments Justice J.S. Sigurdson "found ludicrous," the CBC said.
The Law Society of British Columbia sought and obtained injunctions against the CDNEC's use of the domain names two years ago, and the new ruling makes them permanent, the CBC added.
