FCC Becoming Pro-Family?

Right-wing Christians are encouraged that the Federal Communications Commission is about to become more family friendly in the wake of the appointment of a conservative as chairman and the subsequent hiring of a pro-family activist as a special advisor, according to the Adult Freedom Foundation.

“We as parents know instinctively that simply viewing pornography of any kind can be damaging to children,” says Penny Nance, a former activist from Concerned Women for America and now special advisor.

Nance frequently testified on behalf of families and children before various committees in Congress. She also founded Kid’s First, and will now be giving her opinion on indecency issues at the FCC. Parents Television Council’s Dan Isett expects good things to happen.

“Kevin Martin is now the Chairman of the FCC and, as you know, he is deeply concerned about indecency issues across the board and is committed to a vigorous enforcement of indecency law. In so far as Penny is able to help him know what our concerns are and what we are working on, then all the better,” Isett said.

Pat Trueman of the Family Research Council tells Family News in Focus that Nance can make a big difference at the FCC.

“I think it’ll be a big help to people in the pro family movement because we will have a liaison to that office who will understand our needs and be one of us,” he said.

But, Trueman says President George W. Bush will determine the future of the FCC.

“What will really make the difference is not Penny, not the Chairman, but the upcoming nominations by the President.”

Washington insiders say that there are several indecency rulings coming-up at the FCC that may break in favor of families, especially if President Bush appoints pro-family members to the commission.
